The Friderician Wall Lights

Short lecture by Ulrike Milde, student of Museology at the HTWK Leipzig, currently at her practical semester at the Prussian Foundation of Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg with Dr. Käthe Klappenbach, department of luminary and inventory.

During my practical semester, I attend to the Friderician wall lights as a research project. Currently, there are still more than 500 of formerly about 700 of these objects present in the Prussian Palaces. Not only by their first class manufacture but also by their special design in Friderician Rokoko forms, the wall lights are worth to be researched precisely. Unfortunately, there is rare literature about this topic, and therefore, this project should built a basis for more profound researches.

I started the project with taking new pictures of the wall lights and measured them. This completed the already existing information in the data base. The next step was the typification. I found almost 50 different versions, which should be combined in groups with subcategories. Basis of the typification is the wall plate, because the arms, nozzles and drip-pans were often replaced. On the basis of the drawn wall plates, attributes of the single types should be defined.

The aim of the project is to provide all existing wall lights in the data base with an actual picture, measurements and place as well as with a comment about the respective type. The typification should contribute to identify the historically planned place of every single wall light. That means, it could help to clarify which wall light was created for which room. Thereto, old inventories will be questioned and the decoration forms will be compared to the types of the wall lights. This part of the project should be my bachelor thesis
